Her research tackles different aspects related to the impact of the seafloor environment on mine counter measure.<\/p>\n<p>Sonia Papili has received her master diploma in Geology in Rome in 2002. In 2007 she started as PhD student at RCMG in <a href=\"https:\/\/www.ugent.be\/en\">Ghent University<\/a>. Contemporarily, she started working at the Material Department of the Ministry of Defence with a project supported by <a href=\"https:\/\/www.defence-institute.be\/en\/accueil-english\/\">IRSD<\/a> studying the sand dynamics evolution in relation to sea-mine.<\/p>\n<p>Within the Robotics &#038; Autonomous Systems unit, she will focus on methodologies for rapid seafloor characterisation of the Belgian Coastal Zone and on the application of a data centric approach for data management, in the framework of the <a href=\"https:\/\/mecatron.rma.ac.be\/index.php\/projects\/discimba\/\">DISCIMBA project<\/a>.<\/p>\n<p>Nationally, she actively collaborates with colleagues in RMA and other Belgian Institutions such as RBINS or FOD Economie. Internationally she collaborates with universities and research institutes such as <a href=\"https:\/\/www.colorado.edu\/\">University of Colorado Boulder<\/a> in USA or <a href=\"https:\/\/www.bundeswehr.de\/en\/organization\/equipment\/organization\/wtd-71\">WTD 71<\/a> in Germany.<\/p>\n<p>She has a large experience in offshore data collection and analysis. Biological, chemical, geological, and physical processes modify the properties, composition, and texture of the seabed, adding complexity and heterogeneity. The interactions of these processes over a range of temporal and spatial scales can cause anomalies in the prediction of geotechnical, physical, and acoustic responses. Due to their interconnectivity, we hypothesize that fundamental knowledge gaps of the feedback between biogeochemical processes on and within the seabed can be elucidated through a holistic approach to understanding the seafloor system. To address the interdisciplinarity of seafloor dynamics, we invite all scientists who study the ocean{textquoteright}s seafloor to aid in outlining the dominant processes, state-of-the-art modeling capabilities, and gaps in knowledge through a panel and group discussion.
