By definition, those naval mines are floating\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-style: inherit;\">on the surface or close to the surface of the sea. The MCM capabilities developed until now\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-style: inherit;\">are ill-suited to detect such mines in operational conditions. Drifting mines put hence\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-style: inherit;\">significant stress and work effort on Mine CounterMeasures (MCM) vessels, even for a few mines.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>In this collaboration project with UGent, Exail Robotics Belgium, and Naval Group Belgium, we will<span style=\"font-style: inherit;\">\u00a0capture key\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-style: inherit;\">performance data for detecting drifting mines in various operational conditions. The\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-style: inherit;\">project includes preliminary design of an operational drifting mine detection solution. The\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-style: inherit;\">project is complementary to the remote MCM capability, as it will explore new sensor\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-style: inherit;\">technologies, and sensor fusion algorithms which are absent from the remote MCM program.<\/span><\/p>\n<p>The main outputs of this project are on the one hand a s<span style=\"font-style: inherit;\">election of sensors and post-processing algorithms, with quantitative detection\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-style: inherit;\">performance metrics and on the other hand a c<\/span><span style=\"font-style: inherit;\">ollection of a test data set related to drifting mines. This dataset will be obtained\u00a0first during an on-shore test\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-style: inherit;\">campaign in controlled conditions, in order to\u00a0<\/span><span style=\"font-style: inherit;\">preselect the most promising sensors and algorithms.
