Jamie Wubben is a robotics researcher at the Robotics & Autonomous Systems unit of the Department of Mechanics at the Belgian Royal Military Academy.
His academic journey began in 2015 at the University of Antwerp (UA), where he studied Industrial Engineering: Electronics-ICT. During his master’s studies in 2019, he went abroad to complete his master’s thesis at the Technical University of Valencia (UPV) under the guidance of Prof. Carlos T. Calafate. This was his first introduction to UAVs. After successfully finishing his thesis on the autonomous vision-based landing of UAVs, he pursued a PhD within the Networking Research Group (GRC) at the UPV. His dissertation, titled “Distributed management and coordination of UAV swarms based on infrastructureless wireless networks," was completed (cum laude) after three years of dedicated work under the excellent guidance of Prof. Carlos T. Calafate and Prof. Juan-Carlos Cano. During his PhD, he published multiple papers, attended international conferences, co-supervised bachelor’s and master’s theses, taught classes, completed two additional master’s degrees (Computer and Network Engineering at UPV, and Organization and Management at UA), learned Spanish, participated in research stays, and most importantly; enjoyed every second of it. Following his PhD, he completed a one-year postdoctoral fellowship before returning to Belgium, where he worked remotely for a drone manufacturer preparing R&D proposals.
Currently, his research focuses on UAV swarm navigation, drone detection, sensor fusion, and SLAM.
